Cardiff Matchday Guide: Arsenal v Man City Community Shield

The season starts in Wales this year. Arsenal v Manchester City, Principality Stadium (Millennium Stadium), Sunday 16 August 2026, 3pm BST, the first FA Community Shield played in Cardiff in twenty years, and the first competitive English silverware of 2026/27.

Wembley couldn't take it. Pre-planned concerts had the date locked, so the FA moved the curtain-raiser 150 miles west to the best-located big stadium in Britain. And that location is the whole point of this guide: Principality Stadium sits inside Cardiff city centre. Not a retail park, not a ring road, not a 40-minute shuttle. You come out of Cardiff Central station, walk five minutes, and you're at the gate. The pubs are on the next street. Your hotel is round the corner. Cardiff Castle is directly across the road.

It's one of the easiest away day in the UK, if you know the handful of things that trip people up.

When is the Community Shield 2026 and why is it in Cardiff?

Arsenal are here as 2025/26 Premier League champions. Manchester City qualified as FA Cup winners. Cardiff hosted the Shield six times between 2001 and 2006 while Wembley was being rebuilt, this is only the third time since 2007 that the match has been played anywhere other than Wembley.

Fan allocations and where you'll be sitting:

• Arsenal — South side.

  25,987 initially, with a further 6,755 released on 7 August (32,742 total).

• Manchester City — North Stand.

  26,703, including 100 wheelchair bays.

Ticket prices started at £30 for Category 4 and ran up to £55 with Arsenal and £75 for City's Premium tier, with concessions for over-65s and under-16s and £30 wheelchair tickets including a free personal assistant seat. There was no open general sale — City's windows ran on ticket-buying history at the Etihad, Arsenal's on membership tier, both through the clubs' own portals. Arsenal explicitly disabled Ticket Exchange and ticket transfers for this fixture, and City's tickets are non-transferable with matchday checks.

How to get to Principality Stadium from Cardiff Central

Walk. That's the answer, and it's genuinely the answer for almost everybody.

From Cardiff Central station: 5 minutes on foot. Coming out of the station, the stadium is unmissable:

• Bear left along Wood Street for Gates 5, 6 and 7

• Bear right onto Westgate Street for Gates 4, 3 and 2, continuing round to Gate 1 on Castle Street

From Cardiff Queen Street station: about 15 minutes. From anywhere on St Mary Street: 2–5 minutes. Westgate Street runs parallel, one block over. From Cardiff Bay: it's a 30-minute-plus walk, so take the train to Queen Street (3–4 minutes, 71 services a day) and walk the last 15 from there, or grab a taxi.

Trains to Cardiff — journey times

The bit nobody tells you: getting out is harder than getting in. Transport for Wales is running a split-station system with a full queuing system starting at 16:45 at both Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street. Valleys and Vale of Glamorgan passengers are directed to Queen Street; Ebbw Vale, Maesteg and mainline passengers use Central. There's a separate accessibility queue at Central. Station Terrace closes to general traffic (buses only) from 16:30 to 18:30, and Penarth Road shuts from 30 minutes before the final whistle until an hour after.

Three things follow from that:

1. Buy your return ticket before you travel. Do not join a ticket-machine queue at 5pm.

2. Cardiff Central's surface car parks are closed. The multi-storey stays open.

3. Consider not leaving immediately. Ninety minutes in a pub beats ninety minutes in a queue, and Cardiff is a very good city to be stuck in.

What roads are closed in Cardiff for the Community Shield?

Cardiff shuts its own city centre for this. Fully closed 10:00–20:00: Duke Street, Castle Street, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street and Scott Road. Scott Road and Park Street go earlier, at 07:00, for Gate 5 preparation.

Pedestrians are unaffected, that's the point. But it means your taxi, your Uber and your coach cannot get near the ground, and neither can you if you drive.

Parking and park and ride

There is no spectator parking at or near the stadium. The official club-segregated park and ride is £20 per space, pay on the day or pre-book via JustPark:

  (M4 J33), bus drop-off at Fitzhamon Embankment

• Manchester City — Pentwyn Park & Ride, CF23 8HH

  (M4 J29), bus drop-off on Kingsway by Cardiff Castle

Coaches and minibuses are £30 per vehicle: Arsenal at Lloyd George Avenue (CF10 5EJ, ~20-minute walk), City at the Civic Centre (CF10 3AX). Official club coaches ran at £45 return with Arsenal and £55 adult / £50 junior with City from Chorlton Street. Disabled parking is arranged through the stadium, with designated buses from Taff Mead Embankment on a first-come basis.

Where to stay near Principality Stadium

Cardiff has a small hotel stock for a stadium this size, and you're reading this inside the final week. Two Cardiff Castle concerts on the Friday and Saturday, Hollywood Vampires and Jimmy Eat World, both sold out, have already eaten into the city's beds before a single football fan arrives.

Book today, and consider Sunday night instead of Saturday — it's usually materially cheaper and lets you walk out of a 3pm kick-off without a rush. Start with a Booking.com search for Cardiff city centre and widen from there.

Closest to the ground (1–3 minutes)

• The Parkgate Hotel. Westgate Street, CF10 1DA. Literally across the road, in a restored Grade II Post Office building, with a thermal spa and hydrotherapy pool. AA Hotel of the Year for Wales in 2024. The splurge pick.

• The Safehouse Hostel. 3 Westgate Street, CF10 1DD. The cheapest bed within sight of the gates; small boutique hostel, free breakfast, 24-hour desk. Worth a phone call to confirm before you rely on it.

• The Angel Hotel. Castle Street, CF10 1SZ. The grand Victorian pile facing the stadium's Castle Street corner, with views over Cardiff Castle. The city's classic matchday hotel.

City centre, 5–10 minutes

• Holiday Inn Cardiff City Centre. Castle Street, CF10 1XD. Five minutes by the hotel's own reckoning, opposite Cardiff Castle. Arguably the best-positioned chain hotel in the city.

• Clayton Hotel Cardiff. St Mary Street, CF10 1GD. On the pub strip itself. Brilliant for atmosphere, loud until 2am.

• Premier Inn Cardiff City Centre (Stadium). Custom House Street, CF10 1AP. Next to Cardiff Central, air-con, the reliable family pick. No on-site parking.

• Travelodge Cardiff Central. Imperial Gate, St Mary's Street, CF10 1FA. Cheapest chain option in the core. WiFi is free for 30 minutes, then £3.50 for 24 hours.

• Four Points Flex by Sheraton Cardiff. Station Approach, Saunders Road, CF10 1RH. old listings still circulate under that name. Built into the station approach; the best train-in, train-out room in Cardiff.

• Cardiff Marriott. Mill Lane, CF10 1EZ. Indoor pool and gym, which is rare centrally, on the Mill Lane café quarter.

Quieter, and where to look when the core sells out (8–15 minutes)

Radisson Blu (Meridian Gate, Bute Terrace, one of the tallest buildings in the centre, upper floors look over the stadium roof) · Hotel Indigo (Queen Street, boutique) · Hilton Cardiff (Kingsway, pool and spa, opposite the castle) · Park Plaza (Greyfriars Road, spa) · Leonardo Hotel Cardiff (Park Place, ex-Jurys Inn) · ibis Cardiff Centre (Churchill Way, 15 minutes, usually a bit cheaper).

Cardiff Bay, often the last rooms available

Thirty minutes' walk, or the Bay line to Queen Street and a walk, or ten minutes by taxi. voco St David's is the nicest room product in the city, most rooms with a Bay-facing balcony. Future Inn Cardiff Bay has free on-site parking, which is close to unheard-of in Cardiff, though remember you can't drive into the centre on matchday anyway.

Two more overflow plays if Cardiff is full: Newport is 12 minutes away by train and is the standard spillover city for Cardiff event weekends. Bristol is about 50 minutes. And for groups of four or more, serviced apartments are the least picked-over inventory in the city.

Best pubs near Principality Stadium before Arsenal v Man City

Cardiff's advantage is density, there are dozens of pubs within a quarter-mile of the stadium, but there are also 73,000 people trying to get into them. The good ones have queues before they open on big matchdays. Be early, have a second choice, and remember everything below is inside the 10am–8pm road closure, so you're walking.

Right on the stadium

• City Arms. 10–12 Quay Street. The classic. Beside the stadium and the Arms Park, two rooms off a central bar, five cask lines served by air pressure straight from the cellar. A beer pub first, not a screen barn. Will be rammed from mid-morning; CAMRA's own entry warns it gets "very busy" on stadium days.

• Tiny Rebel Cardiff. 25 Westgate Street. Sixty seconds from the gates. Grade II listed, two floors, with heavy iron shutters and barred windows still in place from the building's earlier life. Welsh craft brewery, Cwtch on cask, open from noon Sunday.

• The Queens Vaults. 29 Westgate Street. Directly opposite the stadium, shows all sport, DJ and live-music zones, Sunday carvery. Strictly over-18s at all time, no good if you're bringing kids.

• The Gatekeeper. 9–10 Westgate Street. Wetherspoons in a huge ex-auction house over three floors, opens at 8am, and pours an unusually good guest-ale range for the chain. When the City Arms is impassable, this is where sheer volume saves you.

The football one

• Elevens Bar & Grill. 15 Castle Street. Gareth Bale's bar, and the most obviously football-first venue in Cardiff: 20 4K screens with surround sound, multiple games at once, memorabilia everywhere, and "Bale Ale" on the handpump. Three-time runner-up for Best for Sport at the Great British Pub Awards.

St Mary Street strip (3–7 minutes)

• The Prince of Wales. 81–83 St Mary Street. Reputedly the biggest pub in Wales, a Grade II listed former Victorian theatre with a spectacular ceiling. Opens at 8am. You will get in.

• The Great Western. 64 St Mary Street. Built around 1879 as the GWR's station hotel, so it's the closest big Spoons to Cardiff Central, and it has a projector as well as screens.

• The Cottage. 25 St Mary Street. Around since about 1750, Grade II listed, gorgeous ornate frontage and a long narrow interior lined with old city photographs. Traditional and beer-led, not a screens pub.

• Cambrian Tap. 51 St Mary Street. Small old boozer given a craft refit, sports TV, summer garden, dog-friendly, and one of the friendliest rooms in town. Craft beer without the chaos.

• Ludo Sports & Live Lounge. 117 St Mary Street. Purpose-built sports bar with an indoor basketball court and a big covered, heated beer garden. Best pick for a large mixed group.

Church Street and High Street (5–7 minutes)

• The Old Arcade. 14 Church Street. One of the most famous rugby pubs in the world and the one to see if you care about pub interiors: built 1844, inter-war panelling, a late-Victorian mirrored bar-back, the original etched "Brains Beer" window, and a CAMRA one-star listing as an interior of special national historic interest. Screens throughout, full Brains range, walls of jerseys.

• Head of Steam. 18–19 Church Street. Serious craft and cask range,

  shows every televised game, pizzas and shuffleboard. Sunday hours are 12:00–22:00, so it's a pre-match and immediate-after option rather than a late one.

Where to buy football shirts and sports merchandise in Cardiff

Manage expectations here, because two things people assume about Cardiff are wrong.

There is no Arsenal store and no Manchester City store in Cardiff, and no official club pop-up, kiosk or merch truck has been announced for this fixture, not by the FA, not by either club, not by the stadium. Buy your shirt before you travel if it matters to you.

In Cardiff, your best bet is JD Sports, which stocks both clubs' replica kit and is open Sundays:

• JD Sports. Unit 40, Grand Arcade, St David's, CF10 2ER (Sun 11:00–17:00). Note this is a new flagship that opened in March 2026.

• Sports Direct. 63–67 Queen Street, CF10 2BE (Sun 11:00–17:00), plus a second branch inside St David's

• Foot Locker. 10–12 Town Wall, St David's, CF10 2EW (Sun 11:00–17:00)

• Footasylum. Units 34–36, Town Wall (trainers and streetwear, thin on kit)

The one official sports store you can walk to from the ground is the WRU Store, 8 Westgate Street, CF10 1NS, between Gates 2/3 and Gate 4, listed as open Sunday 10:00–16:00 (worth a quick check on the day). It's Welsh rugby merchandise only.

Unofficial scarf and badge sellers reliably appear on the Westgate Street, Castle Street and Wood Street approaches on big event days. Fine for a souvenir; not official product.

What to see in Cardiff on Community Shield weekend

⚠️ Read this first: the Principality Stadium tour is closed

The WRU's own booking site says it plainly for August 2026: open every day except 13–17 inclusive, because the venue is hosting the FA Community Shield.

So the dressing rooms, the press suite and the walk down the tunnel are off from Thursday 13 to Monday 17 August. The tour is £19.50 for adults (20% off online with code VISITCARDIFF), and if you want it you need to arrive by Wednesday 12 or stay until Tuesday 18. Worth knowing before you build a weekend around it.

The must-sees

• Cardiff Castle .Castle Street, three minutes from the stadium,

  £16.50 adult, open 09:00–18:00 on the Sunday with last entry 17:00. Two attractions in one: a real Norman motte you can climb and William Burges's spectacularly over-the-top Victorian Gothic interiors, plus the Firing Line military museum. Allow 2–3 hours. (Note: Saturday 15 August has last entries at 12:30 because of a concert. Sunday is unaffected.)

• National Museum Cardiff, Cathays Park, free, ten minutes from the ground, open Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00. An outstanding Impressionist collection thanks to the Davies sisters, plus natural history. Open on match Sunday, closed Mondays until 30 August. The perfect 90 minutes before a 3pm kick-off.

• The Victorian arcades, seven of them, all free to walk, and one of Europe's densest surviving clusters. Castle Arcade is the prettiest; Morgan Arcade has Spillers, which claims to be the oldest record shop in the world; Royal Arcade dates to 1858. This is what makes Cardiff feel unlike any other British city centre. Do it Saturday, many independents don't open Sunday.

• Bute Park. directly behind the castle, free, open 07:30–20:15. 130 acres, 3,000 catalogued trees, the ruins of a 13th-century friary, three cafés, and the best place in Cardiff to kill an hour before kick-off.

• Cardiff Bay & Mermaid Quay. the regenerated docks, 30+ waterfront bars and restaurants. Take the

  Baycar bus 6 (every 30 minutes at weekends, with St Mary Street stops at the Philharmonic and Wyndham Arcade) or a river boat down the Taff from Bute Park, about 25 minutes, run by Aquabus and Cardiff Boat Tours. Allow half a day. On matchday, note that St Mary Street and Westgate Street are closed to traffic 10:00–20:00 and the Cardiff Bus Interchange is shut, so do this Saturday, or use the Bay line from Queen Street.

• Wales Millennium Centre, Bute Place. The foyer is free to walk into; the bronze-and-slate "Armadillo" with Gwyneth Lewis's giant bilingual inscription is Cardiff's signature modern building. Backstage tours run

  Sundays at 11:00, which fits neatly before a 15:00 kick-off if you're staying in the Bay.

• Cardiff Market, the Grade II* listed 1891 iron-and-glass hall on St Mary Street, four minutes from the stadium. Welsh cakes cooked on the bakestone in front of you, Ashton's fishmongers, a properly good cheap breakfast upstairs. Closed Sundays, Saturday only.

Saturday 15 August — Cardiff Market for breakfast (it's shut Sunday), walk the arcades loop, Cardiff Castle before the 12:30 last entry, decompress in Bute Park, river boat down to Cardiff Bay, dinner at Mermaid Quay. Do the bus-and-boat stuff today, while the city centre roads are still open.

Sunday 16 August, matchday — National Museum Cardiff at 10:00, free and ten minutes from the ground. Early lunch in the arcades. In a pub by noon if you want the City Arms or the Old Arcade; 12:30 anywhere else. Through your gate by 13:30. Kick-off 15:00. Then don't run for the 16:45 station queue, Chippy Lane and a pint, and travel at 18:30.
